A SHARK SWIMMING IN A SALMON HEART: THE BEST DRONE PHOTOGRAPHY OF 2020


 


In recent years, the photo taken with the help of a drone has become very popular. Today, thanks to a drone it is possible to take videos or photographs that were previously reserved for very few.

Drone photography is also being recognized in multiple international competitions. One of them is the Drone Photography Awards that for a few years now organizes every year the Association of Artistic Travel Photography founded in Siena, Italy, by Luca Venturi.

“A shark swims among a school of salmon that make the shape of a heart”.

In the framework of the 2020 Drone Photography Awards, the image to which the jury awarded first place is a unique ocean panorama where a shark, a school of salmon, and an unexpected phenomenon of pareidolia (the optical illusion in which our brain makes us distinguish a figure or a pattern in a totally random formation).

The author of the spectacular photograph is the Australian Jim Picôt, who captured the scene off the coast of his country.

Jim Picôt's is just one of spectacular winning images in nine categories, including Wildlife, People, Urban, and Sport.

Particularly timely are the images in the special category of Life during Covid-19. Israeli photographer Tomer Appelbaum won in this category by showing how his compatriots protested peacefully in the age of social distancing. Another featured photo is Mohamed Azmeel's Tropical Bride, who won the wedding category. In this image, the Maldivian photographer got creative with floral decorations to create a memorable portrait of a bride.

Forty-five of the winning photographs will be exhibited in one of Italy's oldest science museums, the Accademia dei Fisiocritici in Siena. Scheduled from October 24 to November 29, 2020, it is the only group exhibition dedicated to aerial photography in Italy.

This is symbolized through the regeneration process of the former mining and industrial enclave of Lake Owens in California. After a destructive past and the creation of the most toxic dust cloud in America, migratory birds are returning and life is beginning anew. "
